A story from a small seed grows organically—each step discovers what comes next rather than forcing a pre-planned plot. 1. SEED: Exactly 5 words implying a world without stating it directly. Contains tension or mystery. 'Last lighthouse, no ocean'—world where oceans disappeared? Keeper delusional? Not 'He found treasure' but 'map drawn in disappearing ink'. 2. EXPANSION 1 (exactly 50 words): Setting + one character. No plot advancement. What does the air smell like? The surface underfoot? Ambient sound? Reader must visualize without knowing what happens. 3. EXPANSION 2 (exactly 150 words): Complication the character cannot solve with current skills. Must arise from the established world, not external (no meteor strikes). A discovery about the world they are already in. 4. EXPANSION 3 (exactly 300 words): Resolution through character change. They learn, sacrifice, or choose something that permanently changes them. Resolution must feel inevitable in retrospect but unpredictable in the moment. CONSTRAINTS: - No 'suddenly' or 'then'—these signal the author distrusts pacing. - Every sentence advances plot or reveals character. If it does neither, delete it. - Best twist: 'the character was wrong about something fundamental, and realizing it forces them to change.' Not 'it was all a dream.' MOMENT OF SURPRISE: After the story—what surprised even you as author? Which character did something unplanned? A story that does not surprise its author will not surprise its reader.
